Plymouth Christmas Lights On: New Decorations Sneak Peek

Downtown Plymouth will shine brightly this holiday season with a spectacular new display of Christmas lights that has never been seen before.

A beautiful wave-shaped arch will form a new passage entrance to the Plymouth Christmas Market (December 2-19) near the Sundial, while at the other end of the market, the Giant Ball Arch, always popular for selfies, will be repaired in multi-colored lights.

Elsewhere in the city center, the streets will be illuminated with giant sail banners and, for the first time in the city, light curtains and other elements that can be animated and used all year round.

The Plymouth City Center Company, which runs the city center Business Improvement District (BID), is working with a new Christmas light supplier, LITE Ltd & Twinkly UK, to create the new display.

The incredible show will be on from Thursday, November 18, coinciding with the first evening shopping night.

The new displays will include stretched banners on New George Street and Cornwall Street and sail banners on streetlights throughout the city center, as well as colorful contemporary lighting in the trees of Frankfort Gate, West End and Armada Way .

This year will see new additions to the illuminations. A “light ceiling” will cover part of Mayflower Street, with rows of lights stretched out across the road.

The side of House of Fraser facing Armada Way will be covered with an impressive light curtain that will feature Christmas messages and displays throughout the holiday season.

Twinkly UK’s innovative technology uses individually controllable LED lights, making it possible to customize the colors and designs of the lights and opening up new opportunities for more creative displays.

The new displays will include stretched banners on New George Street and Cornwall Street and sail banners on streetlights throughout the city center, as well as colorful contemporary lighting in the trees of Frankfort Gate, West End and Armada Way .

As the new lights are easy to change thanks to technology from Twinkly UK, many will be serviced throughout the year and used for other major events.

The Christmas lights will be on at a free, family-friendly event in the Piazza on Thursday, November 18 with a full entertainment program, including an incredible performance by Joey The Lips. More information about the event will be shared soon.

Turning on the Christmas lights is just one part of the expanded downtown Christmas program, which includes Roots Up! The Hip Hop Festival, which now takes place the following evening on Friday November 19, and the Plymouth Christmas Market, which runs from December 2 to 19 and features a live entertainment program, including choirs, a marching band and more Again.
