Dorinda Medley, who during his six seasons on Bravo’s “The real housewives of New York“, made her name as Miss Christmas, has a shocking Halloween confession.” I like it better than Christmas, “she said.
That’s a big deal for the author of the memory-cum-entertaining guide, “Make it enjoyable“, which is known for the elaborate Christmas displays she creates each year at her Berkshire home, Blue Stone Manor, with lights galore, bespoke Blue stone mansion ornaments and a 9 foot nutcracker.
This year, in addition to a huge outdoor exhibit that features an 8-foot dragon, a howling child (“the one everyone thinks looks like Bethenny is crying“) and six, yes six, giant skeletons – but no lights, “No, no, no, I don’t do that.” I don’t do any of that. I’m saving it all for Christmas. – Medley hosts a Halloween dinner which she describes as “a fancy party for Dracula”.
We asked Medley to show us her Halloween table decor, placemats, so you can shop for the look and recreate her spooky dinner presentation in your own home.
MC Glass black glass tile
To set the tone for her black, red and gold table, Medley uses something a little unusual in place of traditional table linens. “I have two beautiful pieces of cut black glass that I’m going to use almost as a table runner,” she says.
Halloween bag of dolls heads
“And for the centerpiece,” said Medley, “I ordered a bag of baby heads.” As we do! And in fact, here we really mean it: apparently everyone is buying bags of baby heads this year because they are very hard to find in stock! Medley’s bag of heads is from Oriental Trading; Similar bags of baby heads can also be found on Amazon, Halloween express, Costumes and Walmart, but the stock is extremely limited.
Godinger Silver Art Co Dublin 9 Piece Punch Bowl Set
“I think for this event I take out the punch bowl and like, drop a baby’s head or two inside with some really low dark red flowers,” she says. “I want it to be like Marilyn Monroe meets Dracula, a little glamorous, but dark.” Medley’s punch bowl was his grandmother’s, but similar sets including punch glasses and a ladle are still sold and can often be found in vintage or antique stores or yard sales.
Lucid Black Dinner Candle
Label sales are crucial to Medley’s continued hunt for holiday decor. “I am a total builder. I always try to use what I have, and then I use it every year. One of her label selling treasures is a set of candelabras that she plans to incorporate into her Halloween table to evoke the elegant Dracula theme.
“I have these two gold candelabras that are so over the top that I bought at a label sale years ago, so I got these sparkling black candles,” says Medley, “and then I go do some very low pillar candles throughout the table.
Cys Excel Dome Glass Bell with Black Wood Base
New this year is a set of bells. “This year I’m doing a lot of glass dome looks, with the little interiors that light up,” says Medley, and she’s focusing on a bat and graveyard motif to continue her vampire theme. Do-it-yourselfers will love to DIY the interiors of the bells, but there are many pre-made Halloween domes available. on sites like Etsy.
Perlé Placemat Rocco Red Barrel Studio
As for the cutlery itself, Medley pulls out a number of treasures that she collected along the way. “I use these beautiful Douglas Little black pearl placemats that I bought years ago from Barney’s Home – remember Barney’s Home it was awesome? It was the best. ”The house of Barney is sadly gone, but these beaded placemats will help you replicate the look of Medley’s now vintage ensemble.
Hermes Balcon du Guadalquivir dinner plate
To create the Dracula look, Medley sets the table with its collection of Hermès dishes and glasses. “I’m going to use my Hermès red patterned plates, because the red is so beautiful, then I’m going to use black cut crystal glasses.” Not everyone can afford a set of Hermès plates, so we’ve rounded up a few alternatives to the look of AliExpress and Amazon at a lower price.
Lismore Waterford Crystal Black Crystal Tumblers
Cut crystal glasses like this set from Waterford are also quite expensive, but if you like the look, you will find similar styles at a more affordable price at auctions, antique stores and real estate sales, or on sites like Etsy or eBay; we especially love this set of vintage Italian crystal wine glasses from Etsy.
Grandin Road Custom Gold Flutes
Medley likes to serve his favorite rosé champagne, Billecart-Salmon, during his dinners, a flute is therefore a must for his Halloween table. “I’ll start with a glass of golden champagne on the side; I love that gold leaf to make the glass stand out, ”says Medley.
Rationalized cutlery Gather by Anthropologie
Medley plans to carry the golden touches of the candelabras and flutes to her cutlery, a gold-plated ensemble that belonged to her grandmother. Gold flatware is still a very popular style that can be found at a number of different price points, like this mid-priced set from Anthropologie, to suit any budget.
Williams Sonoma Black Linen Double Hem Napkins, Set of 4
To highlight the golden cutlery, Medley chose a dark napkin. “I’m making a black towel, just a plain black linen towel that I received from Williams Sonoma. I buy all of my towels from them, ”says Medley,“ and I love a nice black linen towel for Halloween.
Halloween Grandin Road Deli Board
To complete her sleek Dracula look, Medley has added a few new serving pieces to their collection this year. “I ordered a bunch of beautiful platters that have bat handles and bat serving spoons.” Medley’s bat handle set comes from Grandin Road, which is one of his favorite sources of holiday decor.
